Najac didn’t know much about agriculture before joining the Cornell Cooperative Extension.
Stiles Najac secured “GleanMobiles” to streamline the distribution of unused produce from Hudson Valley farms to local food pantries, more than tripling the amount gathered and delivered. In a good year, she said the organization can collect and donate over 300,000 pounds.
Within a few years, she more than tripled Cornell’s gleaning operations, from distributing 70,000 pounds of harvested produce a year to around 240,000 - about 120 tons of food. Through innovation, she’s modified the donation system to benefit thousands of people across six Hudson Valley counties. “So, I changed the structure of the program,” said Stiles. This lag time often led to food spoiling en route to its destination. Because they don’t go to the food bank on the same day as they distribute, the food could be sitting around for several days before it gets to clients,” she explained. They didn’t have a big enough vehicle to transport it, or they didn’t have enough refrigeration back at their pantries to store it. “There were barriers at that point that prevented the from taking food. However, while sitting down with agency leaders after her first year, she realized there were fundamental flaws in the system. At the time, it involved substantial donations to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, which would then redistribute items to food pantries and soup kitchens. Najac took over the Cornell gleaning program 15 years ago. People have to be very intentional about spending their money, and sometimes it’s not on healthy food, it’s survival.” It makes all areas of life more difficult. It becomes difficult to maintain relationships and jobs. She continued: “With food insecurity comes stress, it’s a test on your resiliency. So, if now it’s 15 to 20 percent, that means one of every five or six people in our community doesn’t have enough resources to meet the needs of their family.” “The numbers have dipped, but it’s still not pre-pandemic levels. During the pandemic, the numbers went haywire,” Najac said. “Before the pandemic, 10 to 13 percent of our neighbors were living with food insecurity. Najac describes her primary responsibility with the organization as running its gleaning program, which means collecting excess or unmarketable crops from farmers and getting them to the shelves of area food pantries.
